QwikSpec - Modernizing the Construction Processes

CIO Vendor Over more than 2 decades labour productivity in the construction sector has remained stagnant. The on-site workforce constitutes 95 percent of the total employee base in a construction company. However, the site engineer has been relatively untouched by advances in IT. In fact all the existing enterprise software applications cater to the remaining 5 percent of the workforce which is office based. Applications like ERP, CRM, are based on office based processes, and not on construction operation processes. Bangalore headquartered QwikSpec takes on this challenge to rearrange the proportions and help construction firms throw equal focus on the project’s construction cycle data. QwikSpec’s application provides real-time analytics for construction project decision makers. Analytics, in terms of project progress, cost, and quality issues enables timely decisions to be taken. For example, data collected from one project site identified that in the Finishing stages of a residential tower, Doors were having repeated problems and more than 50 percent of that was due to a faulty tower-bolt. By changing the material, the builder was able to save precious time of the site engineers and cost in the remaining towers of the project.

The collected data from site is also able to forecast the average time taken for the completion of a particular activity, for instance, tiling in an apartment, following which the application extrapolates the time required to finish tiling for the whole floor and tower. Builders are alerted in advance, should the need for more contractor resources on the particular activity is required. This will help them catch up to what was scheduled originally and whether they are able to deliver on time.
QwikSpec’s goal is to improve the workday quality of every employee on the construction site thus improving their productivity. This not only leads to reducing the time taken, but also saving money and improving the overall quality of the construction product.

Mobile Based
Every activity taking place on the project site is followed by an audit trail or a report generation. RERA specifies that every construction project provide a warranty of 5 years after handover for structural defects. In this scenario, having an audit trail of site operations becomes extremely useful. Once what was done manually is now brought into a mobile app by QwikSpec. In the mobile app, a contractor raises a work inspection request. This request coming in hits QwikSpec’s server, leading to generation of task report along with photos and other proofs taken. The person next in line as per the workflow might reject the progress based on the standards mandated to be maintained. Consequently, the contractor engineer has to attend to the issue and resubmit the task. The entire cycle of rejections, approvals and resubmittals get registered on QwikSpec’s server as separate reports.

Currently focusing on the Indian market, QwikSpec is toiling to emerge as the largest operational data platform. This is foreseeable, as the company has close to 12 million data points on their platform across 120 projects handled pan India. In fact, 30 million square feet is deployed with this platform. “We will continue to introduce new modules required for onsite operations to make it more productive”, concludes Ajith Alexander, Managing Director, QwikSpec.
